Legacy dojo software is broken — here's why owners are leaving

April 15, 2026 6 min read

Talk to ten martial arts school owners who've been in business more than five years. Nine of them are running on something they hate — Mindbody, Spark, Zen Planner, Wodify, or some duct-taped combination of three of them. They stay because switching feels impossible, not because the software earns it.

Three things broke

1. Feature gates everywhere

On legacy platforms, almost every useful feature lives behind an upsell. Want SMS reminders? Upgrade. Want custom reports? Upgrade. Want your member portal to actually use your logo? Upgrade. The base price is a teaser; the real price is whatever it costs to turn on the things you assumed were already included.

The economics make sense for the vendor — every gated feature is leverage on your renewal — and they're brutal for the gym owner trying to budget.

2. Platform-as-merchant payments

Most legacy platforms are the merchant of record on every charge. Your member's card hits their Stripe (or Authorize.net) account, not yours. They take a processing fee, sometimes a markup on top, then settle the remainder to you on a delay.

That arrangement quietly hands the platform three things you should own: the customer relationship, the saved card, and the tax filing. If you ever want to leave, you can't bring your members' cards with you. You start over.

3. Software built before phones existed

A lot of these platforms have ten-plus-year-old codebases. The member portal was bolted on. The mobile app is an afterthought. The schedule is a Frankenstein of a calendar widget from 2014. Day-to-day workflows feel like they were designed for the front desk of a 2009 yoga studio — because they were.

What to demand instead

  • Every feature on every plan. Pricing scales with how big your school gets, not with how much you want to do.
  • Your own Stripe account. You're the merchant. You own the cards. You file your own 1099-K like a real business.
  • Full export, anytime. No "paid tier required to leave." If you can't walk out with your data, you're a hostage, not a customer.
  • A platform that respects your time. Built for 2026, not 2014. Mobile-first. Fast. No sixteen clicks to do an obvious thing.

That's the bar we built DojoOS to clear. Not because it's clever marketing — because the legacy bar is so low it's embarrassing.
